If The Last of Us 2's composer's recent message is to mean anything, then fans of the series are in for a potential surprise, as there may be some sort of future project or possible sequel for The Last of Us 2. Although it's a little bit too early to tell, the composer's message could still end up meaning something.

Gustavo Santaolalla, The Last of Us 2's composer, recently took to Twitter to comment about the game and how The Last of Us 2 was nominated for the annual Game Awards, specifically for nine categories with one of them being "Best Score And Music." According to Santaolalla's Twitter message, he is grateful and happy for the game's nomination, and used that as an opportunity to thank Naughty Dog for bringing him along to work on the game. One thing worth noting is that the composer's last sentence writes that "It's just the beginning!"

For those who have already played The Last of Us 2, there are a number of questions or loose ends that they would like to have answered or bring things together. Despite Naughty Dog's VP, Neil Druckmann, stating that The Last of Us 2 won't have any DLC, there is still enough potential to continue the story in one way or another. Even if a direct sequel isn't in the works, some sort of spin-off or maybe even a pre-sequel can be accomplished, ultimately meaning that music can be composed for that game, and Santaolalla's phrase having more significance.

On the contrary, the composer's thoughts may not necessarily mean much when it comes to the game. For instance, HBO greenlit The Last of Us series,  and Santaolalla is working on the project as a composer, which could also fit in with what he wrote on Twitter. Additionally, it may not even deal with The Last of Us 2 in general. For all fans may know, Santaolalla may be referencing a totally different project that may deal with a different game.

For now, all fans can do is speculate, as nothing has been set in stone and no official confirmations have been made for a future The Last of Us game. However, considering how successful The Last of Us 2 has proven to be (despite the initial controversies when the game came out), creating another game could very well be a possibility. As such, whatever that possibility may end up turning into, Naughty Dog is sure enough to bring Santaolalla on board and ask the composer to create music for the project.

The Last of Us 2 is now available on PS4.
