There has been no shortage of The Last of Us 2 fan art, as the game offers plenty of memorable visuals that are worth recreating. One fan has made a new piece of art that shows Ellie exploring Seattle, though the image takes on a comic book style that is very different from other The Last of Us 2 posts.

Given that The Last of Us 2’s graphics provide some of the most photorealistic environments in gaming, it is rare to see fan art stray too much from this path. While there have been some exceptions, such as a neat The Last of Us 2 poster that made the rounds a few months back, most fan-made creations stick with the realistic visual style. As such, the comic-like art piece from Vincenzo Riccardi should blow fans away when they see it. Posted to Reddit by NaiadoftheSea, it is already getting some well-deserved praise.

The piece should look eerily familiar to gamers, as the artist does a great job of capturing The Last of Us 2’s ruined world. A collapsed skyscraper can be seen resting on its side in the background, while the foreground includes the overgrown grass that fans of the series have grown accustomed to. A broken-down highway can be seen on the right of the image, with an abandoned car resting below. In the center of the piece, Ellie can be seen running forward, wielding her signature bow and arrow as she marches forward.

The shading on Ellie is particularly great, as the Last of Us 2 protagonist has part of her face and outfit obscured by shadows. A rifle can be seen on her back, while part of her hair moves to the side of her face to simulate movement. Surrounded by some hanging wires and broken telephone poles, as well as the other structures mentioned above, Ellie looks incredible. However, she is not at the front of the piece, as a large portion of the image is instead taken up by a river of blood.

Ellie stepping into the river not only symbolizes the violent path she is on, but it sends ripples through the blood that show how detailed the piece is. However, the coolest touch is pointed out by Redditor LetsFightingLuv, and it has to do with the reflection in the puddle. The shadowy figure does not look like Ellie, as it is too tall and standing still. Instead, the fan theorizes that it is her adoptive father Joel, a suggestion that would make sense considering that her entire journey is centered on avenging him.

Given how different it is, Vincenzo Riccardi’s The Last of Us 2 fan art is one of the most memorable pieces thus far. While a proper comic book re-telling of the game’s story is unlikely, this artwork gives fans an idea of what such a project would look like.

The Last of Us 2 is available now on PS4.
