This year's PlayStation Experience event had a number of projects for PlayStation VR owners to look forward to, including shooters and first-person horror games. Beyond these projects, Sony also revealed smaller experiences, such as The Last Guardian VR Demo, which will launch for PlayStation VR on December 12th, completely free of charge.

The Last Guardian VR Demo is a standalone experience, meaning players don't have to own a copy of The Last Guardian itself to check it out. According to Sony, The Last Guardian VR Demo will last around 20 minutes, which seems a little on the short side, but it's hard to complain about something that's being released for free.

In the demo, players will control "the boy" as he interacts with Trico. The extent to which players will be able to interact with the winged creature is unknown, but we do know that players will be able to ride on its back at some point in the demo.

Overall, The Last Guardian VR Demo seems like it will serve two purposes. For one, it offers more software for PlayStation VR owners to sink their teeth into, even though the experience is said to only last about 20 minutes total. Secondly, Sony may be using this free demo as a way to potentially sell consumers on the full experience.

Even though The Last Guardian's pre-order numbers exceeded expectations, the fact that the game received a permanent price cut just a couple months after launch could indicate weak sales. Sony has been mostly quiet when it comes to the game's sales numbers, but we do know that it under-performed in its first week on sale in both the UK and Japan.

Perhaps The Last Guardian VR Demo is Sony's way of selling more copies of the main game. Regardless of the company's intentions, though, it's hard to pass up something that's free, and PlayStation VR owners should check it out when it launches next week.
