New The Last Guardian Screenshots Soar to New Heights

Sony Interactive Entertainment and Team Ico officially release brand new screenshots for the PlayStation 4’s forthcoming action-adventure game The Last Guardian.

Once it was revealed that The Last Guardian was going to be a survivor of development hell, fans of the action-adventure title understandably rejoiced, as the game has already been in production and a part of public knowledge for roughly seven years total. Even so, while Team Ico’s follow-up to the excellent Shadow of the Colossus still exists and has a solid launch date for this October, a couple of months have passed since fans have received any information regarding the release.

With that being the case, Sony Interactive Entertainment and Team Ico recently took to PlayStation’s official Facebook account to unveil brand new screenshots for The Last Guardian, showing the unnamed young male protagonist and giant griffin-like creature Trico in several different environments in the game. Of course, taking into account the fact that the title made the jump from PS3 to PS4 during its development, the visuals appear to be considerably smoother and more vibrant than a lot of assets revealed in the past.

As found in the new The Last Guardian stills below, Trico and the young boy are exploring a variety of areas, with some being familiar, and others remaining unseen until just now. For instance, fans get a look at the game’s main characters admiring a waterfall that was briefly featured in its trailer for E3 2016, traversing across a precariously placed rope bridge, and spelunking deep into what may be an underground temple.

Although these fresh screenshots for The Last Guardian are definitely wonderful to look at, a lot of fans are still somewhat hesitant to fully commit to the title, as details concerning its plot and gameplay are relatively scant. Similar to Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, it seems as if developers are banking on part of the allure and charm of the forthcoming release being its ineffable nature, as the studio could be hoping that the attraction of the fantastical unknown draws fans to the game in order to discover what lies within.

However, those who have had a chance to play an in-development version of The Last Guardian reported a lack of confidence in its build at the time, as they indicated that the title has graphical issues, as well as serious gameplay problems. These accounts came from journalists who tried the game out at E3 2016 a couple of months ago. Bearing in mind the aforementioned shortcomings, needless to say, reviews of the demo were rather negative.

Even so, it’s entirely possible that The Last Guardian‘s developers have been able to use the feedback from E3 2016 to refine the game and not only make it more palatable, but also more ideal in terms of the tone and feel creators and fans alike hope for it to project. At any rate, with The Last Guardian having experienced such a lengthy journey up to this point, no matter what the fates hold for the title upon release, it’s still safe to say that it remains one of the most anticipated video games of 2016, if only for the reason that fans will finally get a chance to play it.

The Last Guardian is set to launch on October 25, 2016 for PlayStation 4.
