Fumito Ueda, famed game director behind Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian, says that his next game will be “very different” from the games that fans have seen him make before. While he avoided going into much more detail, Ueda did offer some more thoughts about development of whatever his next game may be.

First off, Ueda said that he us going about early production differently. Whereas with his previous games, he says he started off with visual inspiration from something like a short film, with his next game, he plans of building a prototype. With the amount of tools and game engines now available at his fingertips, Ueda says he doesn’t have to build a game from scratch, which should hopefully make overall development of his next game much shorter. Talking to Eurogamer, Ueda clearly hopes to avoid the long, 10-year development hell that was The Last Guardian:

“I would like to finish a game as soon as quickly possible,” he said with a smile. “Many problems” were responsible for The Last Guardian taking “a very long time”, he said, but offered no further detail.

All of Ueda’s games have shared a very similar visual style and gameplay feel, but don’t count on that necessarily being true of whatever he makes next. Ueda says that he did not set out on his three games having so many similarities:

“The last three games we created I didn’t intend to be very similar to each other. When I start to create a game, always I think we will create something different. But the result was that in the three games there are some similarities. There’s a moment when one game links with another, but I didn’t put it in at the start, it happens in the process. So now, I think I’m creating something very different, but the end result? I can’t say.

The Last Guardian released December 2016 after a tumultuous development, skipping the entire PlayStation 3 generation of consoles, with many not believing the game would ever make it out of development. The game released to generally positive (but not stellar) reviews from critics and fans.

Ueda’s 2005 PlayStation 2 hit Shadow of the Colossus is getting a remastered release on PS4 next year. Ueda, however, is said to have very little to no input in the forthcoming project.

The Last Guardian is available now, exclusively on PlayStation 4.
