Publisher Majesco Entertainment and developer 1st Playable Productions has just released a new trailer and several screenshotsfor The Hidden, a 3DS augmented-reality, paranormal adventure that uses the system’s camera to simulate ghost hunting in the real world. Not busting, mind you. Not busting.
The game puts players in the role of a member of G.E.I.S.T., Ghostly Entity Investigation and Strike Team, a squad of ghost hunters whose sole mission is to seek out, capture and destroy malicious spirits using a myriad of upgradable weapons and hi-tech gadgetry.
It sounds simple enough, but you aren’t going to find every specter in your living room. The catch and appeal of the title is that to complete the game, players must take their 3DS out with them to new places. It’s not entirely clear if the game will give direction, but the trailer depicts a map of sorts with what appears to be suggested routes for the player to travel and search for new spooks. The game clearly likes to lead you to some strange and interesting places, such as the park, a messy kitchen or the backseat of someone’s mini-van (the scariest place of all).
Interestingly, Majesco was in the midst of publishing a similar game called Ghostwire on the DSi before they split from developer A Different Game. Both games’ hooks are the same: spirits living among us that can only be seen with a Nintendo Product. Ghostwire, on the other hand, is a lot more eerie and leans more toward helping ghosts rather than eliminating them. It also seems to still be on the schedule for a release.

The Hidden will be released shortly after Halloween - perfect timing! Hopefully, people are still in the mood for creepy fun. In any case it looks like an interesting game that will really utilize the 3DS’ capabilities, which should make for an immersing and cool experience.
The Hidden releases November 8th, 2011 for the 3DS.
