Netflix released the official trailer for Mike Flanagan's upcoming adaptation of The Haunting of Bly Manor. The preview offers viewers their latest glimpse at The Haunting of Hill House alumni Victoria Pedretti, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, and Henry Thomas in their new roles.

The success of Flanagan's The Haunting of Hill House prompted Netflix to order a second season just months after the series debuted in October 2018. However, the show will return as the second installment of an anthology series with no narrative connection to its predecessor. Instead, multiple returning cast members will portray new characters for an adaption of many stories by author Henry James, including The Haunting of Bly Manor.

Pedretti now portrays governess Dani Clayton, a young woman hired by a man to look after his niece and nephew after they fall into his care, while Thomas portrays a man named Henry Wingrave. The role of returning star Catherine Parker has not been disclosed, but Jackson-Cohen returns as "a charming fellow" named Peter Quint. The new trailer from Netflix teases the apparitions that begin to haunt Bly Manor after Dani arrives on the premises to care for the children.

Based on Shirley Jackson's gothic horror novel of the same name, The Haunting of Hill House followed Pedretti and Jackson-Cohen as two of the five adult Crain family siblings. Alternating between stories in the past and present, the series chronicled the supernatural events that haunted the siblings as they grew up in Hill House and the devastating impact it had on the family well into adulthood. Flanagan previously stated that his experience working on The Haunting of Hill House taught him the value of combining original ideas with the source material for Bly Manor.

Flanagan had already proven himself to be capable of terrifying audiences well before The Haunting of Hill House of Netflix. His previous credits include horror films Absentia, Oculus, Before I Wake, Ouija: Origin of Evil, Gerald's Game, and the sequel to Stanley Kubrick's The Shining titled Doctor Sleep.

The Haunting of Bly Manor arrives just in time for the Halloween season and Netflix is likely hoping the new ghost tale can entice viewers away from the horror stories offered by the competition. Amazon Prime, for example, has the first four of eight anthology films from Blumhouse Productions slated for release in October.

The Haunting of Bly Manor will premiere on Netflix on October 9, 2020.
