Gamescom is taking place from August 23-August 28, with Opening Night Live on August 23 showcasing a ton of upcoming games. That's hardly the only event coming soon, as there will likely be a PlayStation Showcase in September, the Disney and Marvel Games Showcase on September 9, and more beyond that. Of course, one event fans know to look forward to is The Game Awards.

For many fans, The Game Awards may seem like something that has always been around, especially since it grew out of the canceled Spike Game Awards, but it started standing on its own two feet in 2014. This means this year's event will be the ninth since its inception, and new details regarding said event have now been revealed, so fans can play accordingly.

The Game Awards will take place in the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles come December 8. Fans can expect new game premieres and newaewards, though obviously exact details, length, nominees, and such have yet to be decided. Many think the GOTY winner will come down to Elden Ring vs. God of War Ragnarok, though with the latter not out yet, it's obviously far too early to make that judgment call.

Alongside its standard array of categories comes a new one: Best Adaptation. This will recognize "creative work that authentically adapts video game intellectual property to other popular media, including but not limited to theatrical movies, streaming shows, podcasts, novels, and comic books." It seems this stems from some of the reveals last year, where the first trailer for Sonic 2 and the first full trailer for the Halo series were revealed.

Furthermore, just as Summer Game Fest partnered with IMAX, the same experience is going to take place with The Game Awards 2022. This will take place in cities around the world, with more information promised in the coming months. For those who can't physically attend but love a strong IMAX theater, this could very well prove to be popular.

Nonetheless, more information on the event as a whole will be revealed in the coming months. December is still quite some time away after all. In the weeks leading into it, fans can also expect to learn about all the nominations and perhaps some companies that will be in attendance, but it's just a waiting game for now. At least there are a lot of highly anticipated video games releasing this fall to bide the time.

The Game Awards 2022 takes place on December 8.
