Open world survival-horror game The Forest was originally announced for PC and PlayStation 4 four years ago, and has been available in early access on PC since 2014. After years of waiting for more information, we know that PS4 owners will finally be able to play The Forest at some point in 2018.

Whether or not The Forest's PS4 launch will be the full release or an early access version remains to be seen. However, the game should provide the same kind of gameplay as its PC counterpart, which tasks players with surviving in the wilderness after a plane crash. Like many other survival games on the market, The Forest revolves around collecting resources and crafting weapons, but in this game, players also have to worry about cannibals.

The Forest on PS4 will offer single-player and co-op gameplay, but further details are unavailable at this time. We know that the PC game is being built with Oculus Rift in mind, but there's been no word on if the PS4 version will have PlayStation VR support at launch. While we wait for more concrete details, fans can check out The Forest's PS4 release window announcement trailer right here:

If The Forest's PS4 release is indication of a full launch for the game, it's been a long time coming. Fans have been playing the early access version of it for years, as developer Endnight Games has slowly added more content to make it a more fleshed out experience. However, the long development cycle has turned some players off from the game, as The Forest has somewhat faded into obscurity since its initial announcement.

When the game first launched in alpha in 2014, it earned quite a bit of attention. It launched in early access at the height of the survival game craze, and that combined with its horror premise earned it the reputation as being one of the scariest indie horror games of the time. Perhaps this PS4 release window announcement will renew interest in the open world survival-horror game, especially if the developers are able to deliver it on time.

The Forest is available now in early access on PC and is coming to PS4 in 2018.
