Ubisoft’s State of the Game stream for The Division reveals that the game’s upcoming DLC expansion, Last Stand, will release simultaneously on all platforms.
The gaming community may never reach a consensus opinion on Tom Clancy’s The Division, the MMO/FPS hybrid that was supposed to challenge for Destiny‘s throne and fell well short in sales and player retention. Despite being generally well-received at launch, The Division began to stumble once players reached its end-game, which suffered from content deprivation and a heavy reliance on repetitive tasks without a big enough payoff.
Despite the criticism, however, The Division has seen something of a resurgence of late. Ubisoft’s shooter managed to crack the top 10 of Amazon’s best selling games list for 2016, while recent reports have also suggested that The Division‘s playerbase is also beginning to come back. It looks as though Ubisoft will attempt to capitalize on the sudden surge of returning players by making The Division more accessible to everyone, as during the State of the Game stream for The Division earlier today, the publisher confirmed that the Last Stand DLC expansion would be releasing simultaneously on all platforms.
While the practice of simultaneous launches isn’t usually big news in the video game industry these days, it is significant for The Division because its last DLC was a timed exclusive for the Xbox One and PC. That exclusivity was heavily criticized by players of The Division, as it offered Xbox One gamers a full month to experience the game ahead of their PS4 counterparts, leading to most of the expansion getting figured out well before a third of the playerbase was able to play it for the first time.
According to Ubisoft, The Division: Last Stand will feature a new PvP mode, a new Incursion, and new Dark Zone areas among other features, and all players will have access to these new elements simultaneously. Unfortunately, Ubisoft was unable to provide gamers with an update on when to expect the Last Stand’s release – the Division‘s next DLC has already been delayed once, and a number of the game’s players are uneasy about what the lack of a release date means for Last Stand.
Whether or not The Division‘s Last Stand DLC will be able to continue the game’s unexpected return to relevance, it will attempt to do so without isolating a significant number of The Division‘s playerbase. While it’s unlikely the timed exclusivity of The Division‘s DLC was one of the main reasons the game suffered so much after its launch, it certainly didn’t help, and it will be interesting to see what a simultaneous release does for the latest DLC’s sales figures.
Tom Clancy’s The Division is available now for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
