Less than a week after the first Anthem closed alpha test was held, it seems that Ubisoft's The Division 2 is following suit. Today, Ubisoft revealed that it's planning to hold a very limited technical alpha that will run between December 15 and 18. The alpha will be under an NDA, so don't expect to hear any juicy gameplay details beyond vague hints and untrustworthy leaks. Invitations will go out on December 13.

In order to earn access to The Division 2's technical alpha, players will need to have registered for the game's upcoming beta through the official Ubisoft website. There's no special sign-up for the technical alpha, specifically. Ubisoft will instead select the necessary number of players from the already existing pool of beta registrants. Those who haven't signed up yet can still do so, of course, but no new registrants will be getting an invitation. The chosen few have already been pre-selected.

For those who weren't invited, don't stress. Ubisoft has confirmed that there will be an official private beta for The Division 2 prior to launch. Pre-orderers are guaranteed access to this beta, but there's a sign-up for those who haven't pre-ordered as well.

There's no word on what the technical alpha will include at this point. All Ubisoft is willing to say is that the technical alpha will be composed of just a "small portion" of the game. In other words, it should be just large enough to tantalize enough alpha invitees to log on (or at least try and log on) and play for several hours while the servers are stress tested to the point of crashing.

Just because Ubisoft has the experience of launching The Division behind them, not to mention running several concurrent online multiplayer games, too, doesn't mean this technical alpha or even launch will go perfectly smoothly. Ubisoft will likely be pushing its tech, which may or may not be completely rebuilt from the original game, to its absolute limits just to better understand what it's dealing with. This technical test will hopefully make for a better The Division 2 launch for all players. It can't be worst than the original game's launch, at the very least.

The Division 2 releases on March 15, 2019 for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
