Although its plot eventually further delves into world building and even asks the occasional moral question here and there, the main highlight of The Devil Is A Part-Timer is its ensemble of zany characters and their hilarious interactions, especially in the midst of serious situations. To those interested in learning more about the characters, here are some details fans may not have caught.

6 Sadao Maou

sadao maou from The Devil Is a Part Timer

Former Devil King of the magical land Ente Isla, current shift manager at popular fast food franchise, MgRonald's, and protagonist of the series. Maou finds himself forced to rise through the ranks of humanity through a part-time job with neither magic nor his demon army to aid him.

On top of the struggle of trying to conquer a new land while only earning minimum wage, Maou realizes that Emilia, knight of Ente Isla’s Church and the reason he was forced to escape to Earth, has come to defeat him once and for all. However, the two’s reunion battle is cut short by the police and the pair begin to bond throughout the plot.

5 Emi Yusa

Emi Yusa

Once the Hero of Ente Isla, now a call center agent with the self-appointed responsibility of keeping an eye on a certain fast food employee. The half angel, half human deuteragonist ends her first encounter with Maou by slicing one of the horns off his head and begins her third one with pointing a knife at him.

Even as Emi turns to less aggressive approaches to address her suspicions regarding Maou as a potential threat to humanity, she struggles to reconcile her memory of a demon tyrant who she considers responsible for her father’s death with the earnest and kind part-timer before her.

4 Shiro Ashiya

Shiro Ashiya (The Devil Is A Part-Timer!)

Maou’s extremely loyal right-hand and former Demon General has traded in days of military strategizing for unofficial housewife duties in the no-bedroom apartment they share, whipping up struggle meals out of cucumbers and konjac jelly.

Ashiya is a bit of a fanboy over Maou but his eccentrics over Maou’s wellbeing and ironclad grip on their household’s expenses make for some of the series’ most humorous moments. He manages to simultaneously be the straight man and the oddball of the cast. He is also very attached to his general’s cape.

3 Hanzo Urushihara

Lucifer

Also known as Lucifer, the fallen angel enters the series initially as an antagonist, having (perhaps unsurprisingly) switched sides to the Church in exchange for reentrance into heaven which he originally abandoned in search of somewhere more exciting. He moves into Ashiya and Maou’s apartment after being soundly beaten through the joint effort of Emi and Maou.

Although the Church attempts to once again lure him back to their side, he rejects the offer, deciding that his hikikomori lifestyle on Earth and growing video game collection are what heaven truly is.

2 Chiho Sasaki

The Devil Is a Part-Timer! argument

A fellow employee of Maou’s at MgRonald's, where she’s notorious for making mistakes, the high schooler is the only character in the main cast to originate from Earth. When the story starts, she has already fallen for Maou and those feelings lead to her getting swept up in the fantastical antics the Ente Isla natives bring to her world. Chiho eventually discovers Maou’s past as the Demon Lord but affirms that this knowledge changes nothing since she loves for him who he is on Earth.

She dislikes Emi at the beginning of the series, believing her to be Maou’s obsessive ex-girlfriend. Once the true nature of Emi and Maou’s relationship is revealed, Chiho becomes close friends with Emi though she still occasionally gets jealous watching the hero and demon interact.

1 Suzuno Kamazuki

Suzuno

Suzuno is the last member to join the main cast, and like Lucifer, starts as an enemy sent by the Church to eliminate Maou. Her past as Crestia Bell in Ente Isla exposes the corruption of the Church, which used her as an assassin to dispose of allies that had begun to question the Church’s intentions. After meeting Maou, and witnessing the Arkangel Sariel’s torture of Emi, Suzuno decides to stop taking orders from the Church and judge this version of Satan for herself.

One of Suzuno’s most notable traits is that, unlike the rest of the characters, she primarily wears traditional Japanese clothing. This is due to preparing for her journey to Earth by watching historical dramas, leading her to have an outdated understanding of Japanese clothing trends.
