Vendettas Revealed In 'The Darkness II' Co-Op Trailer

Darkness 2 CoOp Trailer

Being in charge of a criminal empire is tough, but how about being in charge of a criminal empire while a demonic entity inhabits you? No question about it, Jackie Estacado has it rough. Sometimes you need a little help, and in The Darkness II, that help comes in the form of four equally crazy individuals who have their own axes to grind against Jackie Estacado's enemy. Yes, four crazy individuals means four player co-op, which is all kinds of exciting.

Just in case the story behind The Darkness II is a little too complicated, there is a handy-dandy story recap video that gives the lowdown on the previous game, as well as some backstory for the newer one. The real draw behind The Darkness, though, is utilizing the... Darkness in combat, ramping  up the normal first person shooter procedures into something a little more special and grotesque, which is the focus of an official gameplay walkthrough.

"Vendettas," the cooperative mode in The Darkness II, is a complimentary campaign that is set alongside the main story, in which the four other anti-heroes wage their own war on The Brotherhood. In addition, there is also "Hit List," where players can replay particular campaign moments or new scenarios -- which might be an affirmation of future DLC, if ever there was one.

The newest trailer focuses on the four different individuals who will be bringing their own flavor of violence and excess to The Darkness II. Before we get to the trailer,  you can find the official brief on each of the characters below.

Wielding the mythical Kusanagi samurai sword rumored to have killed ten thousand innocents, Inugami is a dark and mentally unstable character with revenge-driven motives against The Brotherhood and their allies for the slaughter of his entire family. He can also use a swarm of miniature demons to attack and immobilize his enemies.

Shoshanna is an ultra-efficient agent for Mossad, the Israeli Intelligence Agency, who was sent to New York to combat a spike in Brotherhood activity. Her obedience and devotion to her superiors makes her a perfect operative, and she harbors a passion for hunting and destroying evil in the world as part of her legacy. Shoshanna wields the Arm of the Night, a powerful weapon fueled with Dark essence and the power to fire multiple rounds of gunfire at one time.

Jimmy Wilson

A product of inner-city Glasgow, Scotland, and a notorious alcoholic, Jimmy believes The Brotherhood is simply another form of the Hated English that persecuted his family in the past, and he travels to New York to torment them to the fullest extent. He wields the Dark Axe, and has the ability to summon Darklings that he commonly refers to as "Little Jimmys".

J.P. Dumond

A former doctor from New Orleans, DuMond is burdened with guilt for using a form of Louisiana Voodoo to heal his patients. The use of dark magic drew the attention of The Brotherhood, an organization which J.P. is now forced to combat in order to halt their pursuit of evil relics. J.P. wields the Midnight Stick and can pull enemies into an anatomy-crushing vortex when he tosses his Box of Tricks - a black metal box filled with dark power - into an open area.

Each character has a distinct flavor and their own individual weapons to wield against The Brotherhood. Interestingly enough, they all sound like d20 Urban Arcana characters brought to video game form, which isn't a bad thing at all. Watch the trailer below and be challenged to not find Jimmy Wilson hilarious.

Digital Extremes looks like they're putting together quite the package with The Darkness II. When we walked away from our hands-on time at E3 2011, we were very impressed and very excited to see what the final product would be. The inclusion of a 4-player co-op mode only bolsters the desire to get our hands on the final product.

Are you looking forward to The Darkness II?
