The next entry in Supermassive Games’ series of interactive survival horror games, The Dark Pictures: House of Ashes, was announced in November 2020. The third entry in The Dark Pictures Anthology of games will take players to the Middle East and immerse them in a frightening world of ancient Sumerian myths and demons.

One of those dark beings is Pazuzu, a Mesopotamian king of demons who brings famine and locusts and boasts a frightening appearance composed of human and animal body parts. Fans of the novel or film The Exorcist will also recognize Pazuzu as the terrifying demon who possesses Regan, played by Linda Blair, and Richard Burton’s Father Lamont.

During Summer Game Fest 2021, a new trailer and a release date of October 22 were announced for The Dark Pictures: House of Ashes, as well as details about the Pazuzu Edition of the game. This special edition of House of Ashes is different from The Dark Pictures Triple Pack and will include the full game, a 10-centimeter Underworld Creature figurine, a collector’s box with an image of the Pazuzu statue as encountered in the game, an exclusive art print and stickers, and a pin that depicts an eclipsing moon.

Those who pre-order The Dark Pictures: House of Ashes Pazuzu Edition will also receive early access to the game’s Curator’s Cut, which will become available approximately three months before the title’s official release in October and will allow gamers to play previously unavailable scenes with new choices and different playable characters.

With House of Ashes, Supermassive Games introduces players to an entirely new cast of characters and an unsettling change in environment. Combining the supernatural with the vibe of the Indiana Jones movies, a group of soldiers will unearth an ancient Sumerian temple hidden beneath the desert sands. This unnerving location seems to be haunted by otherworldly creatures caught in the mythical House of Ashes, a kind of purgatory where souls gather to attempt to cross over into the underworld.

The third installment in The Dark Pictures series will feature a number of gameplay improvements, most notably a new 360-degree camera that does away with the fixed view of the previous titles and allows players to control the camera’s movement. House of Ashes will also provide players with a flashlight that can be used to inspect dark corners to uncover secrets and hidden paths. And, in direct response to player feedback, Supermassive has added three difficulty settings to the game — Easy, Medium, and No Holds Barred — which will allow players to adjust how tough the quick-time events will be.

Dark Pictures: House of Ashes will release on October 22, 2021, for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
