Taking inspiration from inventory systems like Fallout's, The Cycle: Frontier rewards cautious players that plan ahead - nothing in a player's inventory is safe on the harsh planet, and while players can attempt to 'insure' their belongings to make deaths slightly less punishing, it's still better to travel light and not pack more than is needed. The free-to-play game puts players against AI enemies and fellow humans, and as anyone who's played any video game with other people can tell you, they're not to be trusted.

For players to become resource-management masters and ensure that they're traveling light, it's important to learn how to 'split' items. This guide will take players through the process of organizing, splitting, and packing items ahead of their expeditions to Fortuna III.

Why Split Items?

A players inventory in The Cycle: Frontier, it shows a variety of resources and weapons one of them being the KBR Longshot

It may seem like a useless mechanic at first - why wouldn't you want to bring all the ammo, all the time? However, as players start scavenging and quickly find their inventories filled/carry weight overwhelmed, it'll become clear that proper inventory management is important.

That's exactly what splitting items is for. A full stack of ammo is useful, but 25 pounds of medium ammo could be better used on healing items, and newer players will need to execute a few successful extractions before they have the resources to unlock the extra storage space that a larger backpack provides.

The final reason to split items is to make sure they can enter The Cycle: Frontier's 'safe pockets' feature - even if the player dies, anything in their 'safe pockets' will not be lost. The drawback is that the pockets can only fit three items, with a maximum of five pounds worth of weight between them. An entire stack of precious metals won't fit, but by splitting the stack, some will stay with the player.

How To Split Items

A feature that is accessible both in the hub and while down on Fortuna III, splitting items is possible by holding shift and left-clicking the desired item stack. By default, the game tries to split the stack into two equal halves; players can increase or decrease the severity of the split at will. It's also possible to change the split without clicking-and-holding the arrows for a long time. Simply click any part of the bar, and the split will quickly jump to represent a number that would fit that part of the bar.

Organizing The Inventory

It's tempting to leave the inventory screen looking like the image above, but a properly organized inventory can save players a lot of time and hassle while they prepare for expeditions.

A quick way for players to find what they're looking for is to use the filters on the left side of the inventory screen - they can quickly hide the surplus items to only show utilities, weapons, consumables, and more. It's also possible to press X while looking at the unfiltered inventory to sort by rarity, alphabetical order, and item type. When players have found their desired items, they can right-click on the items to send them to their backpack, which acts as a smaller inventory that players take with them to the planet below.

To remove items from the inventory (a very satisfying process after returning from a successful extraction), players simply need to right-click on the items in their backpack to send them to their inventory, ready to sell.
