The upcoming release of The Callisto Protocol is looking to be of the highlights of the year for sci-fi horror lovers, as the game aims to revitalize the same niche that was once dominated by none other than Dead Space. Curiously, the Dead Space remake is also coming out relatively soon, but there may be more that separates the two games than just their IP, according to a recent interview.

Striking Distance Studios' Chief Technology Officer, Mark James, recently held an interview about The Callisto Protocol where he talked about the studio's plans for supporting the game after it launches. Whereas Dead Space seems to be a one-and-done experience, which is true to the original game, The Callisto Protocol is getting a series of post-launch expansion packs and DLCs.

The specifics of The Callisto Protocol's special edition content and pre-order goodies had already hinted at this being the case, but the game is being built to support a substantial selection of additional content alongside its main campaign. "We've left the world expandable," said James when discussing the topic. While the interview itself left things purposefully vague, James did hint at "different modes" of gameplay, potentially inspired by some other survival horror titles.

The whole prison break aspect of The Callisto Protocol is one of its biggest draws, and mutants won't be the only type of enemy that makes an appearance. In fact, The Callisto Protocol's security bots will be a significant threat, and James' hinting at exploring other mods that don't necessarily touch upon the main campaign may lean more heavily towards dealing with these security forces, for example.

Naturally, it goes without saying that The Callisto Protocol's terrifying biophages will be the primary antagonists of the game. James' idea of telling the prison break story from a different angle, however, implies that Striking Distance Studios is thinking about the game from outside the box, and may deliver an unexpected original experience before all is said and done.

Since The Callisto Protocol is scarier than Dead Space, according to the developers, fans of this genre have got much to look forward to early in December. And, if Mark James' claims about there being years' worth of post-launch content coming, this experience may be a treat in more ways than many will have initially expected it to be. More details about Callisto Protocol's DLC should be coming after the game comes out, but in the meantime, developers are focused primarily on making the game as good as it can be.

The Callisto Protocol launches on December 2 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
