Gen V, Amazon's The Boys spinoff, has yet to announce an air date. It does appear that the studio has a lot of faith behind the project, as they have reportedly begun work on a writer's room for season 2.

Gen V is set at America's only college for superheroes. Run by Vought International, the college helps prepare up-and-coming "supes" for work in the corporate sector as members of the wider superhero community. Amazon debuted a Gen V trailer last month, which revealed some connections to the main series, including a guest appearance by Ashley Barret (Colby Minifie) and A-Train (Jessie T. Usher).

According to Deadline, Amazon is happy with the first season of Gen V and has started up a writer's room in anticipation of a season 2 renewal. The first season of The Boys spinoff features co-showrunners, executive producer Michele Fazekas and her writing partner Tara Butters. However, the report states that Butters will take a break from the second season. The separation is reportedly amicable, as Butters is simply stepping back due to familial responsibilities.

Series star Chance Perdomo revealed that filming on Gen V wrapped last September. The show is expected to show off a new side of The Boys universe - the main series primarily covers the lives of an anti-superhero group and its attempts to take down the largest superhero team (known as the Seven). Gen V will instead cover the opposite side of the coin: the students in this series are firmly ensconced in the superhero establishment, though they may not stay there.

The show will also likely deconstruct superheroes and the genre like its parent series. In particular, Patrick Schwarzenegger's Golden Boy, who's reportedly the top student at the University and considered a prime candidate to eventually replace Homelander (Antony Starr), appears to be a classic The Boys character. His description mentions that he's charismatic but cautions that few can handle the pressure he faces without cracking.

It is unclear how Gen V will connect with The Boys. The Boys season 4 promises to show off a divided America following Homelander's shocking violence last season. Whether Gen V will address this remains to be seen, but it will probably be mentioned somewhere in the series. After all, The Boys is now entering a phase where superheroes will be a hotly contested force.

Gen V is expected to premiere on Amazon Prime Video in 2023.
