It's not been a year since the first season of Amazon's hardcore superhero show The Boys premieredand fans have eagerly been awaiting the debut of season 2. The studio recently announced that the new season of The Boys would be releasing episodes this September and have started teasing big developments for what is to come.

Based on the graphic novel series, The Boys was a huge hit with fans when it was released on Amazon last year. The series follows a team of average vigilantes who seek to kill the corrupt superheroes who have wronged them. A second season was put into development immediately after the first season premiered last July.

The Boys showrunner, Eric Kripke, has teased that a seperate short film will be released in the middle of the eight new episodes of season two. A companion piece will explore the events between season one and two of lead character Billy Butcher (Karl Urban), who was last seen in the clutches of Anthony Starr's Homelander.  Originally these events were set to be revealed in the second episode of season two, but pacing and logic issues forced them to be cut.

Kripke explained to Collider "We strung the [scenes] into a short film called 'Butcher,' and we're going to release that. It'll work as a companion piece to the show. There's actually references in the show that you won't understand unless you see this thing because it was really tied into our plot."

This news comes as an added bonus for The Boys fans who will now get even more extra content come season two's release. Many have questions surrounding Butcher's fate in the cliffhanger finale and it seems the release of the Butcher short film will bring all the answers.

The Boys season two will premiere on September 4 on Amazon Prime.
