The Boys added Rosemarie DeWitt to its cast for next season. After fans wondered when they would see Hughie Campbell's mother come into the fray, her debut is officially on the horizon.

With their most recent announcement, DeWitt is among the latest casting announcements for The Boys season 4, which went into production shortly after The Boys season 3 wrapped up. Rob Benedict and Elliot Knight have also joined the cast in undisclosed roles.

The Boys' Twitter account confirmed that along with Simon Pegg returning as Hughie's father, DeWitt, known best for her performance in the 2008 Anne Hathaway film Rachel Getting Married, will play Hughie's mother. Although her casting has been official, the show has yet to announce what her character's name is or what kind of role she will play in the show's upcoming season. With Pegg returning, audiences will probably see the dynamics between those three characters for the show's upcoming fourth season.

After not revealing to the audience what exactly happened to Hughie's mother other than that she was not in the picture, it was finally revealed by Hughie in The Boys season 2 finale that she was still alive, thus strongly hinting that she abandoned him and his father when Hughie was a child. Now that DeWitt has officially been confirmed to play the character, the audience may finally find out why she left Hughie and his dad and where she has been all this time. With her presumably coming back into Hughie's life after all this time, one can only wonder how her presence will affect his character.

Hughie went through enough in the past season between letting a walking atomic bomb out into the streets when he helped Soldier Boy escape captivity in Russia and taking the temporary Compound V that was bringing out the worst in him. With his mother presumably re-entering his life after all this time away, this could very well re-awaken some repressed trauma and pain that Hughie had to deal with at a young age. A parent deciding to flee from raising their child can badly damage the child's psyche. The fact that Hughie is as well-adjusted as he is despite not having his mom around is a testament to his character.

Having Hughie's mom around could make for a rather interesting new wrinkle. From the beginning, The Boys has been primarily about making superheroes abhorrent monsters behind the scenes. Adding a new family dynamic could bring some welcome material to the forefront. The show did an excellent job executing the biggest twist it arguably ever had towards the end of The Boys season 3 because no one saw that coming. The inclusion of Hughie's mom may have the same effect.

The Boys seasons 1-3 can be streamed on Amazon Prime Video.
