'The Binding of Isaac' to Get an Expansion and a Potential 3DS Release

The Binding of Isaac 3DS

One of the best indie games to land last year was a little title called The Binding of Isaac, created by Team Meat's Edmund McMillan. Drawing influence from the original Legend of Zelda, The Binding of Isaac is an adventure/RPG funapolooza that maintains both the challenge and comedy found in McMillan's previous game, Super Meat Boy.

The game is already a very long endeavor, with plenty of content in the initial product, and now there are plans to make the game even bigger with a new expansion called The Wrath of the Lamb.

During a recent email swap between McMillan and Joystiq, it was confirmed that gamers can expect the new expansion to land within "the next 2 - 4 months," and it will also provide owners with "about 50 percent more content." Edmund didn't get into specifics about what exactly The Wrath of the Lamb expansion will consist of, but fans can expect "enemies, alt chapters, bosses, items, characters, challenges, new happenings and mechanics as well as a ton of other little details" when the content finally does release.

On top of news on the future expansion, Edmund also spoke up about the chance of a possible 3DS port of The Binding of Isaac. The hit indie title is currently undergoing an evaluation to see if it's appropriate to be made available to 3DS owners. Says McMillan:

"The only news I have on the 3DS is that it seems possible but it's still going through higher ups to make sure there won't be an issue with the 'religious' aspect."

He also took the liberty of confirming that if his game gets ported to the handheld, "it will include the expansion for sure." Those who are concerned with Isaac's well being, in terms of future ports, should know that there are currently talks to bring the game to a few other formats.

"If we don't land the 3DS, the publisher I'm talking to has expressed interest in other digital platforms and is currently contacting them as well about the port."

This may suggest that gamers can look forward to this game landing on the XBLA and PSN in the very near future, but nothing is written in stone yet.

The Binding of Isaac is currently available for PC, Mac, and Linux. It was also nominated for Game Rant's indie game of the year, so make sure you check it out.
