Andy Serkis, who plays Alfred Pennyworth in Matt Reeves' upcoming film, The Batman, has confirmed the film will be embracing a much darker tone compared to previous Batman movies.

When asked by LAD Bible if fans could expect a darker, grittier and broodier version of the character and his story, Serkis -- known for his portrayal as Gollum in The Lord of the Rings trilogy -- replied: "I would say that's not far from the truth."

Despite the plethora of villains available in Batman's rogue gallery, Serkis explained how The Batman primarily explores the emotional connection between his character, Alfred, and Robert Pattinson's Bruce Wayne. According to him, their relationship is the center of the movie's narrative, noting that Reeves had written an "exquisite" script.

Acknowledging the long history of Alfred Pennyworth on screens, Serkis praised those who portrayed the character before him, in particular, Michael Caine's version, which he calls "legendary." Likening the role to playing an iconic character in a William Shakespeare play, Serkis stressed how actors have to revisit the characters in order to "make it your own," whether they are playing a hero or villain. This process allows them to see what it is about the character that connects with them on an inherently personal level.

Production for The Batman was disrupted due to the coronavirus pandemic, with shooting having been shut down indefinitely. The movie has been pushed back to a slated release in October 2021.

The Batman is expected to release in theaters in October 2021.
