The Amazing Spider-Man 2 video game

There are many big superhero movies out this summer, but for an extra taste of comic book mayhem fans can turn to the Marvel tie-in video game The Amazing Spider-Man 2, in which Peter Parker is taken into the dubious tutelage of Kraven the Hunter in order to face off against a new group of threats, including Black Cat, Kingpin, Green Goblin, Electro and Carnage.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is set for release on a wide range of platforms this month, and Activision recently released a dramatic new trailer in which Spider-Man battles various villains to the sound of "Ave Maria." Those who were looking forward to playing as New York City's web-slinging hero on the Xbox One, however, may end up having to wait much longer - or even consider another platform entirely.

With the release date less than a fortnight away, Eurogamer reports that the Xbox One version of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has been delayed indefinitely. In a statement made to MCV, Activision confirmed the story and added that although the publisher is working with Microsoft to secure an Xbox One release, this delay may end up turning into a cancellation.

"We want to inform you that we are revising our release plans for ASM2 on Xbox One. When and whether ASM2 is released on Xbox One is TBD."

No reason has yet been given for the delay, and some retailers are still accepting pre-orders for the Xbox One version of the game. The good news is that there are still six other platforms to choose from, including the Xbox 360, which suggests this is more likely due to technical issues than a dispute between Activision and Microsoft.

Although The Amazing Spider-Man 2 probably can't be classed as one of the most highly-anticipated, must-have game releases of 2014, the ongoing rivalry between the Xbox One and the PS4 means that delays like this one fall under close scrutiny. With Xbox One sales currently lagging behind the PS4 (and Sony having just announced 7 million PS4 units sold), Microsoft really can't afford to lose third party releases on its current-gen console like this, especially in the crucial first year of the Xbox One's release.

We'll keep you updated on any further news regarding the release of an Xbox One version of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, or explanations as to why it's been delayed.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 game will be available April 29, 2014 on the 3DS, PC, PS3, PS4, Wii U and Xbox 360.
