Demon Slayer released the movie Mugen Train in 2020 and became the biggest box office hit at the time. Both of those movies took turns in smashing all kinds of box office records. And now, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime is also planning to join that bandwagon.

Take Place After The End of Season 2

Reincarnated Slime Rimuru Demon Lord

There are lots of crazy things happening in the second season of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. There's a large-scale invasion on Tempest, a duel between Rimuru and the leader of the Holy Paladin, Hinata Sakaguchi, and many more. However, the biggest event has to be Rimuru’s ascension as a Demon Lord.

When the trailer for the new movie was released, it provided valuable information to the viewers. One of which is the true title of the movie, which is That time I got Reincarnated as a Slime: Scarlet Bonds. The other important piece of information that we get from the trailer is the fact that Rimuru is already a demon lord in the movie.

This means the movie takes place after the end of the second season. It is unclear how long after the end of the second season the story of the movie begins, but one thing for sure, we get to see Rimuru and all the other characters with their upgraded powers and abilities in this movie. Not only that, it is highly likely that new characters like Diablo will make an appearance as well.

An Original Story

There are 13 volumes of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime light novel that have been published in Japan, and 6 of them have been adapted to the two seasons of the anime. This means the next story will likely be adapted from volume 7 onwards. However, rather than using the pre-existing story from the source material, like Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, this new movie will feature a brand new original story written especially by Fuse himself, the author of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime.

This is great news for those who already read the light novels because it means there is new content to enjoy. That being said, just like how the story in One Piece's movies are mostly not canon, it is also unclear whether the story of this movie will be canon or not. Because there is no mention of the place nor the characters in this movie in the light novels that have been published thus far. But Fuse might talk about it in the future volume just to tie it all up together.

What Is It About?

Reincarnated Slime Movies characters

From the limited amount of information that is available at the moment, we know that the story of this movie takes place in a small country called Raja. This country is located to the west of Tempest. For the most part, this small country seems to be closed off from the outside world with little to no sign of trade nor diplomatic relations to other larger nations like Dwargon or Blumund.

The main characters of interest are the queen of Raja, and an ogre called Hiiro. The queen is said to have a mysterious power and for some reason, Rimuru is caught on the web of conspiracies surrounding this puzzling queen.

Not only that, Hiiro the ogre is apparently known and quite close to Benimaru in the past, even considered to be his brother. When the ogre clan was attacked by the Orc in the past, they were separated. Benimaru and his group stumble upon Rimuru, while Hiiro ends up in the country of Raja. However, despite being a fellow survivor of the ogre clan, Hiiro seems to have a score to settle with Benimaru.

Release Date

Along with the release of the first official trailer, the release date of the movie was also announced. That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime: Scarlet Bonds, is planned to be released in November 2022. That is, however, only the official Japanese release date. There is no information regarding the international release date yet.

That being said, since there is no exclusive deal with any streaming services being announced yet, we can safely assume that the movie will be treated just like any other anime movies before it, such as Mugen Train and Jujutsu Kaisen 0. This means international fans have to wait for at least a couple of months before we can see this movie on the big screen.
