That '90s Show has yet to be officially renewed, but its season 1 finale left plenty storylines waiting for a season 2. It's unknown where Netflix is leaning, but the series seems to be a hit with old and new fans alike, so it's entirely possible that a new season will be in the works.

Season 1 saw Leia Forman (Callie Haverda) staying with her grandparents, Red (Kurtwood Smith) and Kitty (Debra Jo Rupp). She becomes familiar with the people of Point Place, and forms a bond with a new group there. That '90s Show delivers on its promise to "stand on its own", with its own cast of characters and its own plot lines. Here's some plot lines that might be expected if the series is renewed.

A Love Triangle

That '90s Show Jay Leia Nate

In the final episode of That '90s Show season 1, Leia faces a difficult truth: her time in Point Place is limited. Though she's hooked up with Jay (Mace Coronel), Jay calls things off so that the two don't have to go through the pain of a long distance relationship. Meanwhile, Nate (Maxwell Acee Donovan) is having trouble with his own girlfriend Nikki (Sam Morelos). Nikki is ambitious and smart; Nate thinks he may drag her down. He's left feeling uncertain about his feelings. Leia and Nate have a moment and kiss before being interrupted by Nate's sister and Leia's best friend Gwen (Ashley Aufderheide).

The two aren't able to talk about what happened: at her departure, Leia is waylaid by Jay, who proclaims he does want to be with her after all, and kisses her. Leia apologizes to Nikki, leaving her bewildered. Only Gwen, Nate, and Leia know what truly went down, and there isn't enough time to address the situation. Next season will surely see the young characters of That '90s Show divided: it could tear apart their very group.

Returning Characters May Get More To Do

That 90s Show Fez and Kitty

That '90s Show be able to stand on its own, but it's no secret that the return of the That '70s Show cast is a huge draw. For the most part, the characters only get a few scenes, however. Jackie (Mila Kunis) and Kelso (Ashton Kutcher) amount to little more than a cameo. It's understandable: the cast has grown and have their own commitments; as they're not main characters, it might be difficult to book around other projects.

Other characters appear more often, however. Fez (Wilmer Valderrama) has a full-on subplot about his relationship with the Forman's neighbor Sherri (Andrea Anders), and if that relationship is written into season 2, Fez will surely appear more often. Donna (Laura Prepon) and Eric (Topher Grace) might also need to get more involved with Leia's social life, now that she's set up for her biggest struggle with her friends yet. And Donna has similar experiences she can draw upon for advice: Eric and Donna frequently found themselves in love triangles, the most prominent being with Hyde (Danny Masterson) and Kelso's brother Casey (Luke Wilson).

Jay's parents also have more than a little experience with love triangles. Kunis had previously 'called BS' on where Kelso and Jackie ended up on That '90s Show, and their cameo suggests their relationship still isn't doing too hot. Kunis and Kutcher have an easy in if they want to return, as well.

Also on the slate for a promising return is fan-favorite character Bob Pinciotti (Don Stark). Stark has been open about wanting to return for future seasons, and when he appears in the series, Kitty suggests he always has a place to stay with the Formans. A plot line where Red and Bob have to endure retirement together is an easy one to get on board with.

Kitty's New Job

That '90s Show Kitty On the Phone

Kitty's a naturally nurturing person. That '70s Show often saw her struggling to find a balance to where she felt needed, and that continues into That '90s Show. Facing Leia's departure at the end of the summer, Kitty decides to return to the work force after a decade and a half away. She applies, and gets accepted as, the high school nurse of Point Place.

Though the series appears to be headed for summer '96 next, it's also possible that Kitty's role as school nurse will come up for season 2. Kitty's job was a point of focus on several That '70s Show episodes, and it's totally possible that'll carry over into the sequel. It could also serve as a source of tension between her and Red: though Red was ultimately supportive, he may find himself growing lonely without Kitty around for most of the day.

Nikki and Gwen's Friendship

That '90s Show Nikki

Nikki and Gwen rarely seem to get along. Both appear to be on opposite sides more often than not; Gwen feels apathetic towards her brother at most, and Nikki has a great deal of fondness for her brother. Later on, the two bring on the '90s vibes and go to the mall together - bonding in secret. They both agree not to tell anyone they're friends, but appear to be on better terms.

That's probably going to change in season 2 - Gwen concealed the fact that Nate and Leia kissed, and Nikki will probably feel betrayed by that. The characters having some more drama probably wouldn't hurt the series: That '90s Show consciously chose to have an even gender split among its main cast, but has yet to have the girls interact all that much. In fact, most everyone has friendly interactions - the tiffs and drama in That '70s Show led to some of the best moments.

A Year Apart

That '90s Show A Year Apart

There's a strong suggestion in That '90s Show that the next season will be set in the summer of 1996. The characters on That '90s Show say that they'll all miss Leia, and that Leia will visit as often as possible, but with Leia living primarily in Chicago, she'll be away from her friends for an entire year. And that might mean that the relationship drama may fester for all that time - which could be explosive.

Being apart from her friends from a year also means that Leia's due to return to a school where she had no friends. Gwen, meanwhile, is also an outcast at Point Place High School. The two being away from one another may lead to a strain in their relationship - or the distance could strengthen it immensely. Of course, it's always possible that Donna and Eric could make a move back to Point Place, but Netflix is known for its yearly releases, so a year away might be pratical.
