Microsoft previewed a variety of games spanning across different genres during today's Xbox Games Showcase livestream event, from emotional episodic journies to dark Nordic adventures. One multiplayer puzzle that stood out in the bunch is the upcoming Tetris Effect: Connected.

Since its release way back in the 80s, Tetris has seen a number of variants, innovating the game in many different aspects while keeping true to the game's main puzzle tactics of lining differently shaped pieces as efficiently as possible. One of these many popular modern versions is none other than Tetris Effect.

Originally exclusively released for the PS4 back in 2018, Tetris Effect changes up the original tile-matching game Tetris by crossing over to the world of rhythm-gaming. Players are tasked with piecing blocks, also known as tetrominos, together to the beat of electronic music. A new "zone" mechanic allows players to also place several blocks at once, which allows them to clear over sixteen lines simultaneously while listening to trance music. The game also features beautiful graphics to compliment the music.

And soon, players will get the chance to connect themselves to other players with the addition of the multiplayer expansion entitled Tetris Effect: Connected. The most notable of the newest feature includes a co-op version to enable friends to collaborate and communicate effectively, as well as a competitive multiplayer to pit players against each other. Up to three players can team up or compete with one another locally or over the internet. Computer-controlled players will also be an option.

Tetris Effect recently jumped into the VR realm by releasing for the Oculus Quest back in May, but the puzzle title had already been made available for VR via the Epic Games Store supported by PS4 and PC, so it's not a surprise to see it jump to another virtual reality platform.

After garnering high reviews from critics and named Game of the Year by several publications, the multiplayer expansion will release in time for the holiday season to be added to the Xbox Series X lineup that many players are getting amped up for thanks to the Xbox Games Showcase earlier today.

Tetris Effect: Connected will release this holiday season for Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC.
