Fans of Tetris Effect will want to hop back in to celebrate the anniversary of the iconic video game. Developed by studios Monstars and Resonair, this version pays homage to the tile-matching game with enhanced visuals and audio. In honor of World Tetris Day, two secret levels are available for unlock in Tetris Effect.

Since its creation in 1984, Tetris has seen a multitude of entries ranging from consoles, PC, and mobile. The 2018 release of Tetris Effect attempts to elevate the experience through a host of colorfully themed levels and modes. The title's popularity even led to the release of the Tetris Effect Connected expansion which adds cooperative and competitive multiplayer.

Now players can access two old-school levels to enjoy, but unlocking each is not exactly straightforward. The first is 1989, which references the early origins of Tetris and its release on the Nintendo Game Boy that year. To play it, fans must work together to complete the community goal for the Weekend Ritual. However, this method only unlocks 1989 for a 24-hour period which could leave some players wanting. Fortunately, fans can access the level permanently by grinding up to level 50 in Tetris Effect too.

The other available option is titled 1984, and requires a much trickier method to play. First off, players will need a USB keyboard compatible with their console to input a numerical code. Boot up Tetris Effect and grab the PS4 or Xbox controller. For PlayStation, use the D-pad to enter Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, O, X. Xbox controller users must press, Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, A, B. Once the new screen appears, use the keyboard and type in 06061984 to unlock the secret level permanently.

Tetris is a game that despite its age, never seems to get old for gamers around the world. Newer entries like Tetris Effect or the battle royale Tetris 99 are bringing together players of all kinds. While the core gameplay is addicting, it is great that there are some special unlocks for the anniversary. More themed levels for Tetris Effect should add some life to the title and get some fans back in to grind up to rank 50.

While the new levels are fun references, some players might be left wanting. Unfortunately, there is still no news for PlayStation or PC fans waiting for the Xbox exclusivity on Tetris Effect Connected to end. It does seem a bit unfair to lock the 1984 level behind something arbitrary like requiring a separate piece of hardware as well. That said, veterans need to jump back into Tetris Effect soon to unlock these celebratory levels.

Tetris Effect is available on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
