Tetris and Mario are teaming up for the next event in Tetris 99. In celebration of Super Mario Bros.'s 35th anniversary, the next Maximus Cup is a Super Mario All-Stars edition event, and it begins on December 3, at 11:00 PM PT and will last through December 7, at 10:59 PT.

Maximus Cups in Tetris 99, which is free with a Nintendo Online subscription, allow players to compete in competitions, often with special themes. An Animal Crossing: New Horizons event took place earlier this year, for example, and now it is Super Mario All-Stars' turn.

In a Twitter announcement of the new event, Nintendo showcased some footage of Tetris 99 and this Mario theme. The visuals and music are very much in line with old school Mario games, and the plump plumber can be seen running around on the bottom of the screen during gameplay. One of the things that is interesting about this event is that it is based on the 2D Mario collection, and not the recently released and wonderfully reviewed Super Mario 3D All-Stars.

The other thing that is intriguing about this Mario event inside of Tetris 99 is that, although it is celebrating the 35th Anniversary of Super Mario Bros., it is not based on the game Super Mario Bros. 35. Tetris 99 and Super Mario Bros. 35 play like last-man-standing battle royales and have a lot of similarities. The second to second gameplay is different, with one being a puzzle game and the other being a platformer, but the fact that players must send "trash" to enemies and be the last player alive is the same. But regardless of the exact Mario game that this Maximus Event is based on, it is exciting to see Tetris and Mario together.

Tetris 99 is available for the Nintendo Switch.
