Tetris 99 is not only a fantastic puzzle game for Nintendo Switch owners, it has been host to some delightful Nintendo themed crossovers as well. Previous Maximus Cup events have featured brand-new aesthetics based on Nintendo properties, usually to tie in with new releases, like the Super Mario event coinciding with the release of Super Mario 3D All-Stars.

The next one, which is scheduled to begin on January 8 and run throughout the weekend, features Kirby themed visuals. Specifically, it's based on the fighting game spin-off Kirby Fighters 2, which received a surprise release on Nintendo Switch this past September.

Aside from the Tetris blocks featuring the faces of recognizable Kirby characters like King Dedede, Meta Knight, and, of course, the pink puffball himself, intense, remixed music from the series will play in the background, including what sounds like a new iteration of King Dedede's boss music.

The event will end on January 11 and players will earn points depending on where they position at the end of a match. Players who manage to amass at least 100 points will unlock a Kirby Fighters 2 theme for Tetris 99 that they can keep even after the event ends.

As a reminder, Tetris 99 is only available for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers, but it is a free download. A free demo for Kirby Fighters 2 is also available if anyone is interested in checking that game out.

While it's certainly one of the most simplistic fighting games available, there's a surprising amount of depth to Kirby Fighter 2's mechanics, with each Kirby power and playable character operating quite differently to each other.
