Tetris 99 brought a battle royale twist to the classic puzzle game, and the free title has netted a considerable number of players in the short time since its release. Now, Nintendo is hosting competitions for the battle royale Tetris game, with My Nintendo Gold Points to be awarded to the top players.

Nintendo has announced that this weekend, the Tetris 99 Grand Prix and Tetris 99 Maximus Cup online competitions will launch in Europe and North America, respectively. The Tetris Grand Prix will run from March 8th at 1:00 PM (UTC) to March 11th at 6:59 AM, with the Maximus Cup starting on March 8th at 5:00 AM (PT) and ending on March 10th at 11:59PM. Winners will be awarded 999 My Nintendo Gold Points, which equates to £9.99 / €9.99 /$9.99 in credit for the Nintendo eShop. However, the way that players qualify for the prizes differs in the two locations.

In the Tetris 99 Grand Prix, any European entrant who wins at least one match will be entered into a random drawing to win the prize. Nintendo will then draw 999 random winners from that pool. The North American variant also requires players to win at least one match, but rather than leaving the winners of the prizes up to random chance, all entrants will be ranked based upon how many wins they achieve during the duration of the contest. Nintendo will then award the prizes to the top 999 players with the most wins.

Winning the My Nintendo Gold Points will no doubt be a challenge for most players, as simply scoring a victory against 98 other players in each Tetris 99 match is quite a feat. The competition has been fierce enough that one Tetris expert provided some Tetris 99 gameplay tips on how to improve one's chances at winning, which is likely worth a look for anyone interested in competing over the weekend.

Tetris 99 was added to the Nintendo eShop as a free multiplayer game for Nintendo Switch Online members, following the most recent Nintendo Direct. Since then, it's received considerable praise from players and critics, as well as quickly taking off on Twitch among streamers.

Tetris 99 is available now exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
