Terrifier 2 continues to cement itself as a horror classic. Now, it may just be an Oscar contender after it was jokingly submitted for an Academy Award nomination.

Terrifier 2 has been a sleeper hit and has grossed $7.63 million on a $250,000 budget. The movie centers around Damien Leone's Art the Clown (David Howard Thornton) character, a mysterious, mute clown in black-and-white that has an extreme appetite for gore. In this installment, he goes up against Sienna Shaw (Lauren LaVera), a teenage girl who faces off against Art on Halloween. Channelling a Xena, Warrior Princess-like strength, she may just have what it takes to fight him off if Art doesn’t finish her off first.

Now, Bloody Disgusting co-founder Brad Miska announced on the site that he had submitted Terrifier 2 for Academy Award consideration. “No, it will never actually happen. Yes, it’s a total goof. But you know what? The thought of having members of the Academy endure an extreme unrated horror movie that they would otherwise consider beneath them? That’s just too hilarious of an opportunity to pass up," Miska states. "So, we’re listening to the fans. Everything about Terrifier 2 has been fan-driven every step of the way, and if you want to have a little more fun with this one we’re happy to oblige.”

Terrifier 2 Oscars Academy Awards

Bloody Disgusting has been the main distributor behind the release of Terrifier 2. While the film was only scheduled for a one-week theatrical run, it was soon extended to two, and then finally three. The outlet has been doing everything to support Leone's vision for the slasher movie and seems gleefully aware that the film won’t be winning an Oscar - it’s all for laughs.

Though Terrifier 2 featured some great effects and has been reportedly known to make audiences have a very visceral reaction, it’s not the type of movie that’s usually considered Oscar bait. In fact, most members of the Academy would indeed consider it “beneath them,” as Miska says.

Horror has long been a neglected film genre when it comes to serious award contenders. Despite some truly iconic films being released under the genre, the Academy just can’t seem to get away from their preconceived notions about it. A slasher villain like Art the Clown probably won’t change their mind, but it’s a noble effort.
