Introduced in Terraria's 1.4 update, Luck is a stat that impacts many aspects of Re-Logic's acclaimed sandbox game. Indeed, players that want to maximize their unique item drops, rare enemy spawns, and Fairies in Terraria 1.4 will need to increase their Luck, and this guide will cover exactly how that is done and go into further detail about what is affected by the stat.

To begin, there are five different ways to increase Luck in Terraria 1.4, and they are as follows:

Garden Gnomes in Terraria 1.4

Being near a Garden Gnome grants good Luck.

Ladybug Luck in Terraria 1.4

Coming into contact with a regular ladybug that has been released grants good Luck for 12 minutes, and coming into contact with a golden ladybug that has been released grants good Luck for 24 minutes. Conversely, killing a regular ladybug grants bad Luck for three minutes, and killing a golden ladybug grants bad Luck for six minutes. Fishing with a ladybug counts as killing it.

Lantern Nights in Terraria 1.4

Lantern Nights grant good Luck in all locations.

Luck Potions in Terraria 1.4

Consuming a Lesser Luck Potion, Luck Potion, and Greater Luck Potion will increase Luck for three, five, and 10 minutes respectively. Potions do not stack.

Torch Luck in Terraria 1.4

Being near a Torch placed in the corresponding biome, or holding one in the corresponding biome, grants good Luck. There is no bad Torch Luck in Terraria 1.4, as of May 20, and here is a list of the preferred biomes for each type of Torch:

  • Torch: Does not grant Luck
  • Bone Torch: All biomes except Corruption, Crimson, Desert, Hallow, Jungle, and Snow
  • Coral Torch: Ocean depths
  • Desert Torch: Desert, Underground Desert
  • Hallowed Torch: Hallow, Underground Hallow
  • Ice Torch: Snow, Underground Snow
  • Jungle Torch: Jungle, Underground Jungle

With the ways to increase Luck in Terraria 1.4 established, it is now time to dive into what the stat does. To put things very simply, a player that has maximized their Luck has double the chance of seeing certain items, NPCs, and enemies, and a player that has minimized their Luck has around half the chance of seeing those same things. Additionally, a player's damage is influenced by Luck in many cases, and here is a list of some specific things affected by the stat:

  • Material drop rates
  • Unique item drop rates
  • Hearts and Mana Star drop rates
  • Rare enemy spawns
  • Fairy spawns

To note, this is not a comprehensive list of everything impacted by Luck in Terraria 1.4, but it should make one thing quite clear: the stat has a real impact on gameplay. As such, players should make sure to have a variety of Torches, Potions, and Garden Gnomes on hand as they take on Terraria 1.4's new bosses and continue their exploration.

Terraria is out now on PC, PS3, Xbox 360, iOS, PS Vita, PS4, Xbox One, 3DS, and Switch.
