Blood Moons should never be underestimated in Terraria, as powerful monsters can spawn under the crimson moonbeams if certain triggers are activated. One of these is simply fishing in ordinary water, however, when the waves run scarlet, extraordinary fiends can rise from the depths.

Along with sea monsters such as dangerous Dreadnautilus and wretched Wandering Eye Fish, Zombie Mermen can be dragged up from the carmine depths. Do not take these enemies lightly, as they possess much greater HP, Defense, and mightier traits than normal mobs in Terraria.

How To Find The Zombie Merman

As mentioned above, the way to find a Zombie Merman in Terraria is to do some fishing during a Blood Moon, however, the odds of pulling up a Zombie Merman are relatively low. In fact, so are all the catch rates of the Blood Moon-only underwater enemies, so it may take players a few tries to find the particular fiend they seek.

What The Zombie Merman Does In Combat

As one would expect from a bipedal and undead foe, the Zombie Merman will rush toward the player as directly as possible once it sees its target. It thankfully does not possess any other means of assault, only desiring to bash the adventurer's head in before likely consuming their brains.

It should be mentioned that Zombie Merman, like their lesser regular Zombie kin, can break down doors when there is a Blood Moon in the sky, so be sure to use different kinds of defenses when battling this beast.

The Best Tips For Beating The Zombie Merman

The best tactic is to lure the Zombie Merman into a specific area to trap them in some manner by using their own simplistic pathing AI against them. The Zombie Merman can break through doors, however, they cannot break through walls made with sturdy materials like Stone Walls.

This means that players can make a large Stone Wall as a barrier to separate themselves from the Zombie Merman safely, however, it will be necessary to build a small window of some sort in order to attack one's adversary. Using any sort of range weapon can allow one to defeat the Zombie Merman in this manner, however, due to this mob's high HP and Defense, players will need to pack a powerful weapon in order to take down the undead enemy. Keep in mind, like with all Blood Moon monsters, if morning comes before the player has slain their foe, it will disappear, meaning that all of one's efforts that night will have been wasted.

Additionally, summoned allies can be pretty helpful at chipping away at this tough monster's large life bar. Using buffs of all kinds can also be handy since the Zombie Merman does not have any resistance to effects besides Knockback. If things are looking particularly dicey or if one has an excess of certain resources, players can simply craft and lob a bunch of grenades at a Zombie Merman after luring them into a simple pit trap.

What To Avoid When Fighting The Zombie Merman

The Zombie Merman is a melee enemy that packs a sizable 40 damage in every attack, which means that they are a force to be reckoned with even for players with decent armor. They are also very fast and can cover ground quicker than many other ground-based enemies, so there isn't much time to react unless defenses are present. Furthermore, the beast possesses high Defense and HP, meaning that they won't be a quick foe to dispatch.

The all-around high stats combined with complete immunity to Knockback mean that taking on the Zombie Merman in melee combat is a bad idea unless players have the best weapon and armor.
