Special effects wizards are in their element crafting and then destroying miniatures in order to create great visual effects. CGI artists can also accomplish this. Christopher Nolan looked at those options and decided neither was adequate; he had to use the real thing for his upcoming film Tenet.

Tenet is the latest film from the celebrated director, and is generating plenty of hype after the release of a second trailer that premiered in Fortnite of all places. The film's plot at this point has not been revealed in any kind of detail, and the trailers thus far have been ambiguous. Time manipulation seems likely, but there are certainly more layers to be uncovered, as is Nolan's penchant for complicated, multi-faceted narratives.

One aspect of the film garnering early attention is Nolan's use of an actual commercial plane for an explosive action sequence. The director told UK magazine Total Film "I planned on doing it using miniatures and set-piece builds... it became apparent that it would actually be more efficient to buy a real plane..." So the director procured an actual 747 and used it in a sequence that appears towards the end of the second trailer.

The nearly three-minute trailer for Tenet offers up a lot of exciting action and vague hints at the plot, which star John David Washington has said is confusing. The actors themselves had difficulty making sense of it as they were filming it.

With the actors grasping with the complex plot, it should come as no surprise that fans are also trying to theorize what Tenet could be about. A connection to previous Nolan film, Inception, is a bold guess, but any theory is as valid as the next at this point.

Tenet is supposed to be released in theaters on July 17th.
