Tencent Games, a global video game publisher and developer, has recently announced a new co-op, post-apocalyptic, zombie-survival game created by the team behind PUBG Mobile titled Undawn. The game is expected to be released later this year for mobile devices and PC.
Undawn is said to be a huge, open-world action game set in a dangerous and unforgiving landscape filled with zombies. Navigate through a post-apocalyptic wasteland as humanity's last hope. Here, players will not only need to outrun the undead but also the other humans who managed to survive. Players can scavenge and trade for resources, craft supplies, and forge weapons to protect themselves against a duel battlefront.
While one could indeed attempt survival solo, banding together does make for a stronger front. In Undawn, players will be able to come together to not only survive, but thrive. That means engaging with other players to exchange more resources, build unique shelters, and uniting to fight against the raging threat of the undead.
According to a quote by Rick Li, the executive producer at Lightspeed & Quantum Studios, Tencent Games, the game attempts to redefine the genre by combining the styles of open-world gameplay with elements of RPG. The title will also incorporate both Player vs Player (PvP) and Player vs Environment (PvE) gameplay, possibly similar to the game styles of Overwatch 2. The team hopes that Undawn will be a fresh take on the traditional survival game and give players a new and exciting experience for both mobile and PC.
“With Undawn, we wanted to create a new type of action game that combines open-world freedom with RPG elements that would completely redefine the genre, regardless of platform,” said Rick Li, Executive Producer at Lightspeed & Quantum Studios, Tencent Games. “The fact that we created such an amazing experience for mobile and PC platforms means that even more players around the globe will be able to survive the apocalypse together, creating the potential for a huge new type of open world experience.”
Undawn is currently still in development, and as such, there is not much officially released regarding the gameplay or story. As the game does allow for co-op and players will be able to join together, one may wonder if the game will also introduce custom or preset factions for players to join. Similar to some other multiplayer titles, a number of players seemed to show an interest in the faction systems, such as those in The Last of Us. However, though it may not be everyone's preferred playstyle, it would be interesting to see if this feature makes an appearance in Undawn. Although, it looks like fans will have to wait a while longer before we know for sure.
Undawn is expected to release later this year for iOS, Android, and PC.
