Telltale Games' Walking Dead features one of the most heart-wrenching stories to ever exist in a video game. It follows Lee Everett, a convict who narrowly escaped his prison sentence thanks to a zombie outbreak. He finds a new purpose to live after encountering a young girl named Clementine, but it's up to the player to decide how their story unfolds.

Telltale's Walking Dead allows for a great deal of self-insertion in the form of decision-making. Each choice made throughout the narrative will affect what happens in the future, encouraging the player to approach each choice with care. The game requires some extremely difficult choices to be made, but some are tougher than others.

8 Saving Shawn Or Duck - Episode 1: A New Day

Lee attempts to save Duck from walkers in The Walking Dead

Lee and Clementine first meet Hershel Greene on his ranch during the beginning of the walker outbreak. In search of shelter, Lee asks if they could stay in Hershel's barn for the night, to which he accepts. This part of the story offers a brief moment of tranquility before erupting into complete chaos.

Shawn and Duck are both grabbed by walkers on the outskirts of the ranch, leaving Lee to decide each of their fates. If he opts to save Duck, Kenny will respect him, but choosing to save Shawn will leave Kenny annoyed and frustrated. Though Shawn dies no matter the decision, it's better to save Duck to avoid Kenny's anger.

7 Larry's Fate - Episode 2: Starved For Help

Larry has a heart attack in The Walking Dead

While attempting to escape from the St. John family, Larry exerts slightly too much energy and collapses to the floor. His daughter, Lilly, assumes he's having a heart attack and begins performing C.P.R., but Kenny refuses to allow Larry the chance to turn.

Instead, he asks Lee to assist him in killing Larry to ensure he doesn't come back to life as a walker. If Lee refuses, Kenny will shove him aside and perform the task himself, but siding with Kenny will see Lee restraining Lilly while Kenny drops a salt lick on her father's head. Both outcomes are equally grim, but Lilly will come to despise Lee if he chooses to assist in Larry's death.

6 Letting Ben Go Or Pulling Him Up - Episode 5: No Time Left

Ben gripping onto Lee's arm in The Walking Dead

Ben eventually reveals to Lee that he was the one giving supplies to the bandits. Lee, of course, is furious about this but insists that Ben keeps it a secret from Kenny no matter what. Ben has a habit of talking, however, and Kenny eventually discovers that he was the traitor.

Ben can meet two different fates by the end of the game. If the player wishes, they can allow him to fall to his death, or they can pull him up and encourage him to continue living. If the latter option is chosen, Ben will remain in the party, much to Kenny's disdain, but will receive a much more compelling ending.

5 Looting The Car - Episode 2: Starved For Help

The abandoned car in The Walking Dead

While wandering through the woods, Lee and his comrades will happen upon an abandoned car. Lee's first instinct is to see if it is in working condition, but, unfortunately, it's not. The group then notices the car is full of supplies and quickly begins bickering on whether they should take it or not.

The majority of the group is opposed to taking the food, insisting that the owners may still be alive, but Lee has the final say in the decision. If he opts to take the food, the owner will return in the final episode and berate Lee for ruining his life. He will appear either way, but he will be much angrier if Lee chooses to steal from him.

4 Doug Or Carley - Episode 1: A New Day

Doug and Carley in The Walking Dead

Lee and his companions are swarmed by a large group of walkers after triggering an alarm. At this point in the game, the group has little experience with walkers, so their escape attempt isn't as successful as one would hope. Carley and Doug get grabbed amidst the chaos, leaving Lee to decide on who deserves to be saved more.

If Lee chooses to save Carley, the two begin developing feelings for each other as the story progresses; saving Doug will permit the two to form a firm friendship. Carley and Doug will eventually meet their ends no matter the decision, but the story will play out somewhat differently depending on who is saved.

3 Showing The Bite - Episode 5: No Time Left

Lee examining his bite mark in The Walking Dead

Though he made sure to take extra care in his endeavors, Lee ends up being bitten by a walker while searching for Clementine. He is visibly saddened by this as he knows it means his time is limited, but only the player can choose to inform his companions of the risk he now poses.

Revealing the bite to the others will result in the group taking pity on Lee while concealing it will allow the story to advance as if nothing happened. The group will briefly interrogate Lee later about why he didn't reveal it immediately, and though it's glossed over quite quickly, it diminishes Lee's truthful nature.

2 Cutting Lee's Arm Off - Episode 5: No Time Left

Kenny cutting Lee's arm off in The Walking Dead

If Lee chooses to conceal his bite, Kenny will react as one would expect. He berates Lee for not divulging this information before accepting that what's done is done. He then explains to Lee that the best thing to do is to remove the bite mark by cutting off his arm.

The decision is left up to the player, but sawing the arm off is likely the better scenario. It offers Lee a semblance of hope that he might survive the infection, and even though he doesn't, it's arguably the wisest choice he could make.

1 Lee's Fate - Episode 5: No Time Left

Clementine aims a gun at Lee in The Walking Dead

Having spent five episodes with Lee, it is likely players will struggle when deciding how his story ends. Since being bitten, Lee has grown exceptionally weak and needs to rely on others to help him through his journey. Though he saves Clementine from her captor, he requires her to do him one last favor before he turns.

It is up to the player to decide whether they should shoot Lee or allow him to turn. Both options are undoubtedly cruel, but a choice needs to be made for the story to advance. If the player shoots Lee, they will end his suffering; letting him live would prolong it indefinitely.

The Walking Dead video game is available now on PC, PS3, PS4, PS Vita, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Android, and iOS.
