Before the highly-appreciated series Loki premiered on Disney Plus, fans wondered about the direction the show would be taking and had some wild theories about its premise. The first trailer had many fans comparing it to other popular projects on television, but what they found extremely strange was director Kate Herron revealing that some of the inspiration for the show came from the children’s show Teletubbies.
For weeks, with episodes of Loki arriving on the streaming platform on a weekly basis, fans remained confused. In episode 5, “Journey Into Mystery,” fans were first introduced to The Void, which Herron previously revealed was meant to be a “mix of hope and despair” and look like an overgrown garden. With the series now over, Herron has confirmed that The Void was inspired by the "rolling hills of dystopia" in Teletubbies and the children’s show has the perfect response to the homage.
On the official Teletubbies Twitter account, the show shared a poster of one of its characters Dipsy, the green Teletubby, appearing as a Loki Variant. The character wears the traditional Loki horned helmet and poses in front of what looks like a cheaper alternative to the fancy clock-like background in the Loki posters. “Loki, meet Dipsy - we’ll see you in The Void,” read the tweet, and Herron was tagged in it. Within a few hours, the Loki director had seen the poster and responded saying it was “the best moment of [her] career.”
In the children’s series, Dipsy is the most stubborn character and finds it hard to agree with his companions. Sound familiar? It seems like he isn’t very different from the God of Mischief and feels like the perfect candidate to be a Loki Variant. Apart from The Void, episode 5 was also significant as it introduced fans to various iterations of Loki, including an alligator, and Teletubbies has perfectly played on this concept.
In the Disney Plus series, after the God of Mischief is pruned by Judge Ravonna Renslayer, he arrives in what seems like a post-apocalyptic world and comes face-to-face with multiple versions of himself in the first post-credits scene of Loki. When he follows them to Loki Palace, he faces an entire team of bandits who also happen to be Loki Variants.
While Tom Hiddleston has become synonymous with the God of Mischief in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it was interesting for fans to see various iterations of the character show up and fight to prove their might. Wouldn’t it be fun if Dipsy was one of them?
