Ono Thinks ‘Tekken vs Virtua Fighter’ Wouldn’t Have Surprised Anyone

Yoshinori Ono is a producer at Capcom who worked on the original Street Fighter games. He believes that Tekken vs. Virtua Fighter would be too obvious and wanted to shock fans with Tekken X Street Fighter /Street Fighter X Tekken.

“Rather than making something where people think ‘oh, we knew that was coming’, we wanted to make something to surprise people.”

He certainly got his wish as people are still in awe of the concept of Street Fighter X Tekken and continue to be dazzled by screens and gameplay from the upcoming release. Since Tekken and Virtua Fighter have both been three-dimensional fighting games since their origin, the mash-up of those two wouldn’t be as surprising. You would pretty much know what to expect from the game, as far as gameplay design. Combining Street Fighter, a fighting game franchise based in 2D, with Tekken brought more questions and much more surprise.

“…when it is Tekken and Street Fighter everyone is just really surprised and even we don’t really know how it’s going to end. So as creators we really want to try something and make something new that no one’s done and this is definitely the best opportunity so far.”

The announcement that there would be two games in development added fuel to the fire. With both sets of characters traveling into the opposing franchise’s environment, gamers will be able to choose which game’s gameplay style they prefer. Some in the gaming community are more concerned about the Tekken X Street Fighter, with Street Fighter characters fighting in the 3D space, than Street Fighter X Tekken. It’s understandable since most are now more comfortable with the 3D models operating in a 2D style game with the fighting game resurgence that Street Fighter IV started.

Street Fighter X Tekken and Tekken X Street Fighter will be released on the Xbox 360, PS3, and arcades sometime in the future.
