Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is like a spiritual successor to both the 80s cartoon and the last great game in this series, Turtles in Time. The titular turtles, along with April and Splinter, are enjoying some pizza one fine evening when they see that Shredder is up to his old tricks on the news.

The gang heads to the TV station to see what’s going on, which leads to a chase to stop Krang from getting his mechanical body back together. That’s the main gist of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge‘s plot. Here are some handy tips and things to know before jumping into the actual gameplay segments.

8 Three Difficulties

There are no assist options in Shredder’s Revenge. However, those new to brawlers should not fear for there are three difficulties to choose from in the game. The easiest is Chill, with Gnarly being the hardest.

There is no way to change these settings after starting a game, so players should choose wisely. For those planning to go it alone, it may be better to pick Chill. Anyone who plans on having a full team will likely find that Gnarly or Okay is the way to go.

7 Don’t Skip The Tutorial

There is no standard tutorial stage in the game. Instead, every time players continue their file, they will see about twenty tutorial pop-ups that will go through the basic move sets of the characters.

While players can easily figure the mechanics out for themselves, it only takes a few minutes to go through this small selection. It’s worth it just to see some unusual moves like how to grab an opponent and fling them at the screen. That’s always satisfying in a brawler.

6 You Can Party With Six People

The co-op in Shredder’s Revenge is one of the most robust multiplayer experiences for a brawler in quite some time. Players can group up in teams of six. That’s almost every character in the game, except for Casey Jones who is a hidden seventh.

Players can co-op in the game locally or find a room online. That’s even more multiplayer options than Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game had at launch. There is a mode for every type of player out there.

5 Who Best To Solo

What about players that aren’t going to play this game in co-op? Every character will work in solo mode but Donatello has a lot of extra advantages. For example, his staff gives him a good range. Characters do level up so for the first run through the game, it’s best to stick with one character.

Donatello is as good a choice as any. To make life easier, players can go to the hideout menu and find the Fitness Journal top. This will detail when characters level up based on points and what is gained.

4 Changing Characters

Unlike Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game which also featured a world map, the method for changing characters is a little different in this game. Players can back out of the map, choose a new character, and then go back to where they left off.

In Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game, every character had to work their way through the same levels as if it was always a new experience. This made leveling everyone up more of a chore. Thankfully, Shredder’s Revenge is better designed and some players may wish to know how this works before jumping in.

3 Pay Attention To Challenges

Challenges are something new to the brawler genre or at least they are from a TMNT point of view. Every stage will have a set amount of goals in them. One may have players kill a certain amount of enemies with jump attacks while another may force players to avoid getting hit by traps.

Completing these challenges will earn players points that will go towards leveling up. It’s a good way to power level early on, so, before beginning a stage, players should always make a point of pausing the game and checking the active challenges.

2 Food Tips

Exploring the world in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredder's Revenge

This is a basic brawler tip, but for those who are new to the genre, this may be new. Pizza will pop up in the game naturally as a way to refresh players' health. Once grabbed, it will be consumed right away so there is no way to save it.

Unless one is about to die, it's best to avoid grabbing the pizza until after the area is completed. If playing in co-op, players should give the pizza to whoever has the lowest health. Sometimes there will be party pizzas that will heal everyone.

1 Look Out For Hidden Things

A side quest in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredder's Revenge

Challenges are not the only thing players need to be aware of in Shredder’s Revenge. There are secrets too. Most levels have one hidden character like April’s boss, Burne Thompson. Finding him will unlock a side quest on the world map wherein players have to track down a set amount of old newspapers.

Completing this quest will give players a big boost in experience points. Stages are relatively short so it is a good idea to play through them once randomly and then return to them with a fine-toothed comb. This is another good way to power level.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge was released on June 16, 2022 and is available on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
