Reports suggest that Activision is publishing a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game that is being developed for multiple platforms by Platinum Games.

Since the indie comics were first released in the 80s, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have been a pop culture hit. The franchise was quickly adapted to everything from cartoons to movies to arcade machines and thirty years later the quartet of ninjas are still in the spotlight. According to a report from Gematsu, the next video game incarnation of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is being developed by Platinum Games and will be published by Activision.

The same source outed the game's existence earlier this month thanks to information about the rating of games in Brazil and the report also confirmed that the game would be released on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. Today's new information about Platinum's involvement comes from a rating by the Australian Classification Board.

As readers probably expect, details about the game are basically non-existent at this point. Neither Activision nor Platinum have talked about TMNT on the record yet, but after two separate leaked confirmations, it seems like it is only a matter of time before the game is officially announced.

Platinum's involvement seems like the perfect choice, considering the studio's recent track record with licensed properties. Although The Legend of Korra wasn't quite as well-received as the animated spin-off series that inspired it, the game was still a lot of fun and did a pretty decent job capturing the look, tone, and feel of Korra's version of the 1920s. Platinum's take on Transformers, in Transformers Devastation, was even more successful and took inspiration for the classic cartoons, rather than the recent mess of Hollywood films.

If Platinum sticks to that formula and creates a TMNT game inspired by the early comics or (more likely) the cartoons, then it seems like a recipe for success. Hollywood's most recent take on the turtles wasn't a total financial disaster, but it did get panned by most critics. Returning to the franchise's roots (like the studio did with Transformers) seems like the best way to resurrect the property in video game form.

Check back for more details once the game is officially announced and until then super fans of the heroes in a half shell will just have to revisit TMNT: Turtles in Time to hold themselves over.

What do you about Platinum developing a TMNT game? What direction would you like to see them take the franchise? Let us know in the comments.
