One of the better, and thought to be overlooked, titles that arrived on the PlayStation Vita was Tearaway. Developed by the creative minds behind the LittleBigPlanet series, Media Molecule, the game made full use of the hardware it appeared on and managed to impress the majority of critics with its inept sense of creativity as a result — although our review was a little less enthusiastic about the title.
Regardless, Sony took to Gamescom and announced that Tearaway Unfolded would be coming to the PlayStation 4 console, although instead of a brand new adventure it’ll be a revamped version of the original Vita title.
While it’s hard to fathom how a developer would be able to port a game that’s so intricately weaved into the very core of the Vita to a home console, Media Molecule has decided to take the task head on and bring its paper-themed platformer to PS4. Instead of trying to mirror the mechanics that were utilized in the handheld version, Tearaway Unfolded has been “built from the ground up” to incorporate the unique controls offered by the DualShock 4.
Whether it’s lighting up a dark and dreary room with the glow that’s omitted from the DualShock 4’s light bar or summoning gale force winds with the controller’s touchpad, the developer has ensured that fans that experienced the original will be able to play around with some new toys on the PS4.
All of this sounds like a great opportunity for those that missed out on the initial game on Vita to see what Tearaway is all about, but Media Molecule hasn’t made it sound like this is the new project that it has teased in the past. Instead, it’s likely that this is simply a side project that Sony green-lit to ensure that PlayStation 4 owners wouldn’t be without in the gap between major releases.
Keeping that in mind, when the install base for the PlayStation 4 has already surpassed 10 million it makes sense that Sony would want to run the title past consumers again.
