The latest in the Tales series, Tales of Xillia, is a new role-playing game developed by Namco Bandai. For the first time in the series, gamers will be able to take part in an adventure centering around two main characters,  one male and one female.

Jude Matis is a young man who attends a medical school in the royal city who excels at his work and gets things done. He is designed by series veteran Kōsuke Fujishima, who has previously designed characters for Tales of Symphonia, Tales of the Abyss and Tales of Vesperia. The female main character is Mira Maxwell, a master of spirits controlling the four elements of earth, water, wind and fire. She is designed by series veteran Mutsumi Inomata, who had previously designed characters for Tales of Destiny, Tales of Eternia and, most recently, Tales of Graces, among other Tales games.

At the beginning of the game, players will be able to choose a character and experience the rest of the game from that character's point of view. The battle system is called the 'Double Raid Linear Motion Battle System', which focuses on cooperative combat. Developers believe that this battle system will be a major selling point for the game. The trailer shows off some of the characters' moves as well as their design.

Also in the trailer, Namco Bandai shows off the new environments that players will explore. The developers are striving to break new ground with Tales of Xillia's visual approach, which differs from other entries in the series.

While much of the actual story remains of mystery, the publisher claims that Tales of Xillia is an "RPG of steadfast convictions".

As with most Tales games, there is no word of whether the game will receive an international release or will remain exclusive to its native Japan. The franchise has had much success in the Japanese market but has only achieved limited success in other territories. This game, the first PS3 exclusive in the series, marks the 15th Anniversary of the Tales franchise and will hopefully be one of its best entries yet.

Tales of Xillia is planned for Japanese release in 2011, exclusively on the PS3.
