While there was a lot of excitement building up to the launch of Tales of Arise, it does seem like the game has been a massive success on Steam for Bandai Namco Studios. Tales of Arise released just 2 days ago to excellent reviews, and is currently the highest rated game in this long-running series.

Taking the sales success of Persona 4 Golden on Steam as an example, it looks like JRPGs have been increasing in popularity on PC in recent years. Japanese companies are now focusing on launching their games on Steam alongside other versions of the game, as opposed to releasing it down the line. Upon looking at the number of concurrent players on Steam for Tales of Arise, it is shaping up to be the breakout hit this franchise needed.

This data comes from Steamdb which tracks various stats related to user engagement for all games on the platform. At the time of writing, there are 60,274 users playing Tales of Arise on Steam, and this number has only been increasing since launch. This also happens to be the all-time peak for the game as of this moment. By comparison, Tales of Berseria and Tales of Zestiria peaked with 8,085 and 9,696 players respectively. This number is astonishingly higher than that of Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition, which peaked at 3,450 concurrent players, while Tales of Symphonia is ranked lowest with 1,414 maximum concurrent users.

Given that it peaked higher than all other games in the series combined, there can be little doubt that Tales of Arise has been a massive success on Steam. Tales of Zestiria being second is not a surprise since it was the first game in the franchise to launch on the platform. While the number of peak concurrent players had reduced in future releases, Tales of Arise seems to have re-invigorated player interest.

As of right now, there is no official announcement of the total worldwide sales of the game, but it looks like word-of-mouth has been strong in addition to the positive critical reception. The massive increase in budget and the graphical quality of Tales of Arise also probably helped.

While fans had to wait for many months for the western release of the previous games in the series, Tales of Arise had a simultaneous worldwide launch. This may be the key for strong opening sales, and fans of the Yakuza series can hope that Lost Judgment also performs this well when it launches worldwide in just a couple of weeks.

Tales of Arise is now available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
