When Tales from the Borderlands was released, it took the FPS franchise down a different path, giving players the chance to immerse themselves in a story-based game where they could choose their own adventure. A sequel has been in the works, with a small batch of details for the new Tales from the Borderlands recently coming to light.

In the same style as the first Tales From the Borderlands there will be opportunities for players to pick what happens in-game. The setting will take place on Pandora, the original planet where the games all take place, though the provided details regarding the playable characters introduce a new cast. Instead of Rhys or Fiona, players will be able to choose from a scientist named Anu and Fran, who owns a frozen yoghurt shop. The third character might be Anu's brother Octavio, but nothing has been set in stone.

Along with a new crew comes a game classification of M18 for gore and strong violence, implied by the example encounters listed, including shooting, maiming, and attempted reattachment of a head to a corpse. Choices made by the player will affect the character being controlled at that point and could potentially be fatal, forcing the player to respawn at the previous checkpoint to try again. Having the M rating will be necessary given the violent nature of the game, with Tiny Tina's Wonderlands being the only T-rated game in the series.

There are other new aspects to the sequel that will set it apart from the first Tales from the Borderlands as well. Gearbox will be in charge of the game production rather than Telltale Games, since the company shut its doors in 2018. The amount of combat situations and fatalities being offered are also higher than the original, with the extended classification information noting that there are several situations that involve murder, one of which includes freezing a person and shattering their body into pieces. However, elemental damage itself isn't new to the series, since cryo-based weapons have been in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, Borderlands 3, and in Tiny Tina's Wonderlands as frost weapons.

While the sequel may not have Handsome Jack and all of his shenanigans as part of the narrative, hopefully the comedy will remain prevalent throughout the bloodshed. Mishaps like the eyeball scooping misadventure from the original Tales from the Borderlands come to mind.

The new Tales From the Borderlands is set to be released later in 2022.
