Virtual Reality is becoming an exciting game platform that is steadily becoming more and more accessible. Gamers can engage in many different games, with a variety of VR headsets available to use. This can be seen with peripherals like the Oculus Quest 2, the PlayStation VR, or the HTC Vive Pro 2, all of which have their own library of playable games. Some publishers and developers are even revisiting older games and creating brand-new VR versions. This includes games like Resident Evil 4 VR Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas VR.
This VR version of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas was recently announced to be coming to the Oculus Quest 2 headset. Currently, there's no gameplay footage of this new re-imagined game, but according to the developers it has been in the works for some time now. There's a lot of possibilities this version of the game, but fans will have to keep waiting for more information. However, CEO of the parent company and publisher of the GTA franchise, Take-Two Interactive's Strauss Zelnick, suggests that there can potentially be more VR versions coming in the future.
This was stated in a company earnings call that detailed Take-Two's fiscal period, which would end in the second quarter of 2022. One of the questions that was asked during this time was about the partnership between Facebook and Rockstar Games, along with the background of how Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is coming to the Oculus Quest 2. Zelnick replied that Take-Two was excited at the partnership, and while he was skeptical about VR technology at first, he said that it was exciting to participate in.
Zelnick in particular did express negative opinions about VR tech in the past. As far back as 2016, he said that VR was "too expensive" for most gamers, and last year said that he was thankful that the company didn't "waste any money" on VR. This is contradictory to the fact that three other VR games were released by the company at the time, and GTA: San Andreas VR was most likely in development as well. Needless to say, his opinion did turn around quickly.
The conference call goes into more detail regarding Zelnick's opinion on VR, listing games like NBA 2K VR and Rockstar's L.A. Noire The VR Case Files as games that are successful transitions to this style. He closed the question by saying that more VR titles will be coming in the future, and that the creatives at the studio are excited at the opportunities it presents.
