Takashi Miike and Disney Plus probably aren't on many peoples' collaboration lists but in an unexpected turn, the notorious Japanese writer and director is partnering with the streaming service to bring his latest venture to audiences: Connect.

Miikes' newest 6-part series Connect will debut at the Busan International Film Festival in its On Screen section during the festival run between October 6 and 7. Following the premiere, Connect will be presented as a Star Original on Disney Plus, with a release date pending.

The Korean language series is billed as a fantasy crime thriller and is based on a Korean webtoon of the same name, which was released in 2020. The plot follows a man kidnapped by a gang of organ harvesters who remove one of his eyes before transplanting it into the sockets of a prolific and notorious serial killer. Left alive and with one good eye, the man begins to experience visions of horrific crimes from the killer's perspective. The official trailer for the Connect adaptation was released by Disney Plus.

While no English language or subbed trailer is available yet, the Korean language trailer offers a glimpse at what viewers can expect. If the plot wasn't enough to ensure it's for mature audiences, the trailer will leave little doubt. Filled with blood, strange fleshy tendrils, and brief images of what the serial killer does to his victims, the show definitely lines up with Miikes' darker entries.

The all-star Korean cast features Jung Haein (Snowdrop, Start-Up, Tune in for Love) in the lead role of Ha Dong Soo, Go Kyung-Pyo (Decision to Leave, Seoul Vibe) as the serial killer Oh Jin Seop, and Kim Hyejun (Inspector Koo, Kingdom, Sinkhole) as the mysterious Irang. Miike takes the directors' chair for the series, which was written by Heo-Dam and Masaru Nakamura, whose previous credits include Monstrum and Like a Dragon: Prologue, respectively.

While it may seem an odd partnership, it bears remembering that Disney Plus hosts a wide range of content from the original animated features, to Marvel content, and content for mature audiences. For example, It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia and Criminal Minds are available in their entirety to stream on the service.

Connect premieres at the Busan International Film Festival held on October 6 and 7 with a Disney Plus release date TBA.
