Based on the fantasy world of Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher series has been a huge hit among fantasy gaming fans since its first release. The fun is set to continue in the third game, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which takes the blend of magic, action combat, crafting, and exploration of the series to new levels—with improvements and high aspirations across the board.
Everything about The Witcher 3 is set to be bigger and more impressive than ever, with an estimated 100 hours of gameplay, and a setting said to be over 30 times larger than earlier games. Its story, too, is all new. As the protagonist Geralt, players will have to stop a terrifying army from wreaking havoc on the Northern Kingdoms.
The third entry in the series will introduce some new mechanics, such as the ability to fight on horseback, swim underwater, use a crossbow, and jump and climb over obstacles—some mechanics are said to be similar to those of the Uncharted series. It will also feature a new ability called “witcher-sense,” letting players track enemies by following a trail.
With a new, dynamic day and night system—and what is probably the only dynamic beard growth system in video games—The Witcher 3 is set to be an excellent, ambitious entry in a beloved fantasy game series.
