Mario Kart 8
- Release May 29, 2014
As the eighth installment in the long-running Mario Kart series, Mario Kart 8 has been riding a wave of success. The newest entry in the series features the same gameplay that made Mario Kart famous—cartoony graphics, bizarre racetracks, and items for getting ahead and wrecking friendships. But it also introduces new items like anti-gravity racing, the Super Horn—defeats the previously unbeatable Spiny Shell—and a special replay mode that allows players to slow down, speed up, and re-watch their previous races in all their glory.
With an online mode supporting up to 12 players, local multiplayer, and fully customizable tournaments, Mario Kart 8 boasts a great blend of tried-and-true gameplay mechanics with new innovations. The game was almost universally acclaimed by critics, with its smoothness and graphics being the major celebrated elements. The game was so popular that it even boosted Wii U sales by over 600 percent, with bundled copies of Mario Kart making up 82 percent of the units sold.
