What is Kingdom Hearts?
Kingdom Hearts is an action-RPG franchise from Square Enix, the company behind such critically-acclaimed RPGs as Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy. In Kingdom Hearts, players take control of a character named Sora, a Keyblade warrior who, like many other Square Enix protagonists, is tasked with stopping an evil force from enveloping the universe.
Sora is joined in his adventures by recognizable characters from Disney, such as Donald Duck, Goofy, and Mickey Mouse, as he traverses colorful worlds based on Disney franchises. Sora also interacts with popular characters from Square Enix’s Final Fantasy franchise, including Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy VII and Squall Leonhart from Final Fantasy VIII.
Throughout of the Kingdom Hearts series, Sora must join forces with these allies to defeat evil organizations, battle famous villains, and destroy strange creatures known as the Heartless. These battles take place across home console games, handheld spinoffs that trade the action-RPG gameplay for card battling, and in special collections that add extras to help fill in the story gaps.
So far, eight original Kingdom Hearts games have been released. A few of these titles have been remade for additional platforms, which has seen their stories expanded, graphics improved, and gameplay tweaked. The latest game in the long-running Kingdom Hearts series is Kingdom Hearts: 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, which features a remake of the 3DS game Dream Drop Distance, a cinematic that retells the story of the mobile game Kingdom Hearts X, and a new adventure that is set after the events of the PSP game Birth by Sleep.
