FIFA is the long-running series of soccer games from Electronic Arts. The series was the first to have an official license from the International Federation of Association Football, and later installments have incorporated licensed leagues and teams, including some of the largest leagues in the Federation. The first game, FIFA International Soccer, was released in 1993, and the series has been adding new players, teams, and mechanics since its inception. The first release broke the mold for sports games of the time, as it used an isometric view rather than the standard top-down or birds-eye views. Lionel Messi, captain of the Argentina national team, has been the face of the franchise since FIFA 13.

Despite criticism for some of its mechanics, and competition from other sports games distributors, by 2010 the FIFA series was the best-selling sports video game franchise in the world and EA Sports’ most profitable series. With over 22 games in the series and several spinoff games, including a street football series and management games, the FIFA franchise is a staple of sports games. FIFA‘s commitment to expanding and improving with each subsequent game has made it an important part of video game history.
