The Guardians of the Galaxy movies quickly became a surprise smash hit in the Marvel Cinematic Universe when the unlikely group of misfit heroes starred in their first movie back in 2014. There are many reasons for their enduring appeal, not the least of which is director James Gunn and the incredibly endearing cast behind all the lovable characters. In fact, the 2nd film in the series brought in Sylvester Stallone to join its family, and now that same star has just confirmed he'll be returning for the next entry. It's just happy times all around with Guardians of the Galaxy, provided one ignores all the extremely not happy times.

Stallone, who recently set a remarkable new record in his long and storied film career, just posted an interesting new set of videos on Instagram that serves a double purpose. Not only does the post confirm his return as Ravager captain Stakar Ogord in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (which Gunn recently revealed has just begun shooting), but it also provides a fascinating glimpse behind the scenes at one of the more tech-heavy aspects of the movies. It turns out that CG still plays a big role even when he isn't embodying a humanoid shark with a dad bod in The Suicide Squad.

Stallone took the videos while inside a rig made for face capturing, facilitated by countless cameras all pointed at whoever's inside from various angles. "Here I am on the set of Guardians of the Galaxy," he said at the start, immediately confirming his return, "this is very sensitive equipment that films every expression you could possibly have that can be duplicated if you're not around." The Rocky and Rambo star then moved his camera around to get some good looks at the sophisticated devices, marveling that "movie making has become definitely a science." Epilepsy warning: The 2nd video in the post features lots of flashes that could potentially trigger seizures in susceptible viewers.

The 2nd video then shows Stallone inside the rig as the process starts up and he's bombarded with flashes, allowing the cameras to capture his image. It's an impressive piece of tech that really goes to show how much work is involved behind the scenes. It's interesting that even characters one wouldn't expect to need that much tinkering in the post-production department seem to require this sort of process.

Granted, maybe Stallone's character will be flung around in the air a bunch, or even partake in a Dragonball Z-style big hair and flying fight. That would be a pretty ideal reason to turn the Expendables actor into a CG model. If not that, then how about some fans get ahold of his model and stage battles between Stakar and King Shark from The Suicide Squad. Hey, nothing wrong with dreaming.

Odds are this is more for something like exterior shots of his character's spaceship doing spaceship things. But even if he doesn't get to go all Goku on a dude, it's still a super interesting piece of tech that's really cool to see from the inside.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 5, 2023.
